@rupertmurdoch This article : Murdoch accuses Google of aiding piracy
How is it possible that someone with so much media understanding and with influence over so many millions of people has such a basic understanding of the emerging media landscape?
These comments and indeed the entire reaction of traditional media around SOPA and online piracy is so solidly based in a now clearly outmoded business model that media owners are clinging to so dearly. Its time to realise that the model is broken. Its time to realise that media is decentralised. Its time to realise that its time to move on and innovate.
But again, media owners currently are so mired in their outmoded and broken business model that to innovate to them means paywalls, DRM and more and more ways to make their audience (the actual product they are selling) feel alienated and comoditised. What is actually needed is true innovation, not just in ways to deliver and protect the old business model, but to really be visionary and create new ways to generate profits from the content they create.
Frankly, copyright protection is never going to work, and the more pissed off your audience becomes, the more inclined they will be to pirate that content. I’d say, open your content to create a massive userbase / audience. An audience that becomes your product.
The profits from the existing model wont be there for much longer and there is nothing you can do about it. The media & entertainment business must innovate or die.
